Featured speaker is Elizabeth Friend who will be discussing portraits of our ancestors 1700's,1800's. This is a color slide program that explains why the portraits look as they do and what they tell us about American life in earlier days.  The lecture is supplemented with examples from the speaker's collection.

Sunday February 10, 2019, 2:00pm–3:30pm   When Women Went to Sea

This slide program features the lives and adventures of 19th century Cape Cod women who accompanied their sea captain husbands on long sea voyages. Based on Jim's award winning book, Sail Away Ladies: Stories of Cape Cod Women in the Age of Sail, audience will learn about how these "sister sailors" survived, storms, shipwrecks, pirate attacks, and raising children on the high seas.

Using Nye's firsthand descriptions and later newspaper accounts, ship's logs, assorted diaries, and family archives, Brian Murphy chronicles the horrific nine days that thirteen people suffered adrift on the cold gray Atlantic. Adrift brings readers to the edge of human limits, where every frantic decision and desperate act is a potential life saver or life taker.

Sun, April 14, 2019,  2:00pm – 3:30pm   Two Taverns of Cedarville

Sandwich Historian John Nye Cullity will present a slide show and talk about two taverns that existed in Cedarville (old East Sandwich village) in the early 1800s. The nature of rural tavern life, stage coach operation, and economic interconnections will be discussed.
